They don't come much better

Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteering is not always easy. At Perspectives, volunteers are the backbone of our programs and provide the necessary talent and resources to make sure day-to-day activities run smoothly. Volunteer service can be lengthy or take up a significant amount of one’s time and energy, but for those that commit themselves to service, it can be richly rewarding. Bill Poole is one of the Perspectives volunteers that truly make our programs something special.

Bill has been volunteering at Perspectives since 2014. He originally came to us through his former faith community, St. George’s Episcopal Church in St. Louis Park, as part of their parish’s monthly day of service at Perspectives. Over that time Bill has served every Wednesday night during the school year, despite commuting more than 20 miles between his new home and the Perspectives Family Center.

In addition to his regular Wednesday night shift, Bill volunteers for all Kids Connection special events, from Thanksgiving to Graduation and everything in between. When asked about his favorite memory, Bill couldn’t choose just one, but says, “Graduation shows how the kids have grown and how they can express their gratitude.”

Bill has owned his own business for 26 years, but he has also worked with youth in group homes and emergency shelters. When he began serving at Perspectives, he felt a very strong connection with the mission and the way it’s carried out in Kids Connection program. Bill explains, “This is a safe place with a level of accountability. Perspectives works to feed families both literally and with multi-dimensional learning, caring, and hope.”

Bill’s presence helps to carry on the spirit of caring and hope. Perspective Director of Donor & Community Engagement, Kaylie Burns Gahagan, recalls an encounter Bill had early in the school year, “During his first shift in September, I watched Bill quickly get to his knees to greet and speak with a familiar student at eye-level. That student knew, without a doubt, that he was the most important thing to Bill at that moment.”
