Children playingIn the Beginning

Perspectives, Inc. was founded in 1976 by a small group of individuals who had an interest in increasing the awareness in chemical dependency within the Twin Cities community. Perspectives’ initial name was New Realities and in the beginning, we were housed in the YWCA at Lyman Lodge in Excelsior, MN. After 18 months, New Realities rented our own offices and renamed the agency Perspectives, Inc.

Over the next 15 years

For the next five years, we became well known in the Twin Cities area specifically in the western suburbs, for our non-threatening approach to discussing the issues around chemical dependency. During this time, Perspectives became one of the first pioneers to develop support groups and workshops dealing with families who had experienced or who were currently experiencing substance abuse. We also provided information aimed at removing stigmas,Children in the park interventions, and accessing treatment programs.

In 1981, the present Executive Director, Jeannie Seeley-Smith, joined Perspectives to assist in moving the agency from community awareness to the next phase of providing direct services to individuals and families. During this period, we became the first in the twin cities to bring focus to the issues for the adult child of the alcoholic, and started the first ACA support group in the area.

Throughout the next 10 years, Perspectives moved from providing community education in the form of workshops and began developing programs that provided direct services to individuals and families. In doing so, we expanded our programs to include prevention and intervention services around the issues of physical abuse. Also, during this time we opened up a walk-in center that was staffed by volunteer peer counselors.

In the late 1980's, Perspectives developed an interest and a strategy for exclusively serving underserved and economically disadvantaged families. That decision changed Perspectives' direction significantly.

Today

Today, 32 years later, with an annual budget of just under $2,000,000 and approximately $6,000,000 in property, we have become an award-winning, multi-program human service agency that providesMother and daughters comprehensive services to hundreds of homeless and disadvantaged families.

A central theme at Perspectives is working with the "total family", a methodology listed in “Best Practices” as providing most effective programming.  Beyond this philosophy, our uniqueness also comes with our expertise in providing services to children and families of different cultures. Our diverse program staff is made up of professional, licensed social workers, chemical dependency counselors, early family educators, licensed elementary teachers, a teacher/chef, experienced youth workers, mental health workers, community developers, and advocates for homeless women and children. Our administrative staff includes Certified Fundraisers, CPAs, and professionals in public administration.

Our Family Center

Perspectives is located in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, a first ring suburb of Minneapolis. Our attractive family-friendly 22,000 square foot building houses our entire staff as well as our children and parent education programs. Our center is complete with reception area, offices, visitation rooms, classrooms, a multi-purpose room, group rooms, a large training room, Family Resource Room, and a spectacular children's commercial/learning kitchen/classroom known as Kids Cafe.

Perspectives has always been committed to creating an attractive center that provides a feeling of welcome and care for the families we serve. For that purpose, over the last nine years. we have invested more than $1,500,000 in the redesign and reconstruction of the Family Center. In 1999, we completed our Kids Cafe.  In 2000, we built new classrooms and launched our Reach for the Stars Children's Program. In 2002, we built our playground, and in 2003 we completed a $450,000 build out, which included an additional 6,000 sq. feet of classrooms for our Kids Connection Program. In 2005, we renovated our 2nd kitchen, which is used for our Parenting Time Program.

Perspectives Supportive HousingSupportive Housing Program

Our largest innovative, Perspectives' Supportive Housing Program is just down the road from our Family Center.  Located in an affordable housing neighborhood, called Louisiana Court, Perspectives has gradually acquired five apartment buildings; two of these buildings were purchased at the end of 2001 – after a $2,000,000 capital drive. At the end of the summer in 2002, our Supportive Housing Program expanded its services and became the largest Supportive Housing Program in Minnesota; housing at any given time 52 mothers and over 100 children.
